“Twelve Dancers”

Inspired Native Designs for Every Day

Twelve Dancers

I am re-imagining my Winnebago inspired designs on quality, upcycled denim jackets. This jacket’s hand-embroidery showcases twelve of our many, many Winnebago women’s applique patterns and filled me with such joy while I worked away on it. How wonderful it is to see all the Aunties out there dancing at pow wow time.

“Blossom”

She Is Beautiful

Blossom

Google “Pete Pettibone’s sister” and you will find images of a pretty Ho-Chunk woman from the Wisconsin Historical Society circa 1866 - circa 1908. She makes the applique dress extraordinarily beautiful. The shawl she is holding inspired me for this jacket. I wish she knew that she (and not her brother, Pete) provided inspiration to another Ho-Chunk woman all these years later.

“Healing”

Sweetgrass, Tobacco, Cedar, Sage and Touch

Healing

When I finished this hand-embroidered shirt I took her out for a walk in the park. You know. Like normal people do. It actually felt right to take her out into the park to be with the milkweed, wildflowers and oak trees. The hands are from a photograph I took of Mom and my hands joined together some years back. While I stitched, I was conscious of sewing good vibes into this work. Sweetgrass, tobacco, cedar, sage and touch are our best healers, eh?

“Summer”

A Celebration of Winnebago Designs

and Summer Colors Shining Brightly

Summer

I'm crazy for flowers. I usually have some sitting in my house all the time, even in winter. I put my last hand-embroidered stitches on this jacket when the rain was pounding on the windows during a significant summer storm. Ah....the rain...it was so welcome. The flowers all lifted their faces to meet the rain, as did I. Soon after the sun came out and I was able to grab a few photos.

“MMIWG2S: Break the Chain”

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls & Two-Spirits

MMIWG2S: Break the Chain

This jacket’s design and hand-embroidery represents missing and murdered women, girls, two-spirits, and hope. The chain links are many, with red hands silencing these all-too-many family members; except for one link which is broken, open and unsuppressed. The profiles shape shift and they become eagles, their bodies and souls uplifted and totally free from violence.

I took a photograph of a jingle dancer at a pow wow in 2018. It inspired the design on this jacket.

Good Vibes

I had so much fun hand-embroidering this baby. I enjoy the mind-bender of developing my design within the constraints of the denim. I felt such a positive energy exude doing the work and from the finished piece.
